The financial and commercial capital of the Country, accommodating more than 12 million people presently, Mumbai has garbage (MSW) production to the tune of 6500 Tons per day. It also produces nearly 2500 Tons of construction and demolition (C&D) waste per day.

 Functional Elements of SWM System in Mumbai
The collection and transportation of the huge amount of waste is a matter of concern for any Corporation. MCGM operates a huge fleet of 983 Municipal and Private vehicles for collection of waste making 1396 number of trips each day.

The three transfer stations at Mahalaxmi, Kurla and Versova support intermediate transfer of waste from the surrounding areas upto the dumping grounds.
